He highlighted the need for a stricter interpretation of the laws, arguing that challenges like Timber's, which involve a semi-stamping approach, should not be tolerated. "The player has clearly overstepped the mark," Hackett said. "It's an offense that demands action, but it often goes unnoticed due to a lack of consistency in refereeing.
"Players are getting away with these types of challenges because the approach is too lenient. These actions endanger the safety of opponents, and it's time for a change."
And this is the part most people miss: the impact on player safety. Hackett believes that referees should prioritize player welfare above all else. With challenges like Timber's on the rise, a firmer stance is needed, he argues.
But not everyone agrees. Fellow ex-referee Dermot Gallagher has a different take on a similar incident involving Daniel Ballard and Mikel Merino. After VAR reviewed the challenge, Gallagher stood by the decision to not issue a red card. He explained, "It's strong defending. Merino initiated the clash, and these kinds of challenges are common in football."
