Portland’s biggest pedestrian square is getting less friendly to cars and trucks. Monument Square is listed as a park in the city code, but it has increasingly been used by businesses for deliveries and general parking.

Maine Democrats and Republicans are living in different political realities. In a survey released last week, 90 percent of Republicans said their financial situation was worse than it was a year ago. Yet only 14 percent of Democrats said so.

​​Midcoast animal shelters are overwhelmed with unwanted cats. Although the problem is widespread in the region, one hotspot has been the town of Union.

Workers have been digging through Maine’s trash to get to the bottom of our growing consumption habits. A recent state report that found that the amount of waste going to landfills has increased significantly over the last decade.
