Picture this: Back in 1908, a young white boy named Francis crosses paths with Rose, an Indigenous girl, and they form an instant, deep bond. They spend their childhood exploring the fields and woods near Derry, Maine, sharing adventures that feel like something out of a fairy tale. Yet, Rose warns Francis to stay away from one forbidden spot in the woods—a place harboring a terrifying evil we recognize as It, the shape-shifting entity at the heart of Stephen King's universe. Of course, curiosity wins, and Francis ventures in, only for Rose to save him using a slingshot that echoes through time, eventually guiding Dick Hallorann (played by Chris Chalk) to Pennywise's (Bill Skarsgård) lair in the original IT films.
But wait, that's not all. As the episode unfolds, we discover that Francis grows up to become General Shaw (James Remar), while Rose (Kimberly Guerrero) ends up managing an antique shop in Derry. When Francis's family relocates, he erases all memories of It, the town, and Rose from his mind. It's not until a military experiment involving hallucinogenic drugs triggers a flood of recollections that the past resurfaces, inspiring Operation Precept—a mission to confront the beast.
When I chatted with the IT: Welcome to Derry cast, James Remar and Kimberly Guerrero passionately explained how this opening sequence from Episode 3 profoundly influences the trajectories of Francis and Rose's existences. It doesn't just involve entanglements with Pennywise; it establishes them as fated partners whose paths are forever intertwined.
“As I see it, that childhood clash with the demon, followed by Rose's rescue and my forced departure from Derry under my father's orders, steered General Francis Shaw's entire path," Remar reflected. "He plunges into a military career... And inevitably, everyone gets drawn back to Derry."
Guerrero echoed this, noting that the encounter "played a crucial role in strengthening [Rose's] commitment to her protective duties against this monster."
“I feel destined for this mission," Guerrero elaborated. "It's an ancestral summons handed down through generations, and I'm ready to embrace it as a warrior and guide. To fulfill that, I must forgo personal romance. Sure, I'll experience love through family, community, and the people of Derry, but true romantic affection? That's off the table."
Indeed, neither Francis nor Rose can fully embrace romantic love. "His departure created a void in her heart she never healed from," Guerrero shared. "Even at 64, a part of her remains that young girl yearning for love, a partner, and a simple life together."
Remar revealed a parallel struggle for Francis. "From what I gather, General Shaw never tied the knot or started a family," he said. "No family photos on my desk, no wedding pictures on the wall—just my dedication to the Air Force."
"And I've wedded myself to my responsibilities," Guerrero added.
"So we're mirrors of each other," Remar concluded. "She commits to her calling, I to mine, sacrificing the romantic dreams we cherished as children."
While Francis and Rose mirror one another in sacrifice, they're also heading toward a potential clash. Rose's role demands guarding Pennywise's secret, whereas Francis's mission is to locate and harness It as a weapon. This sets up a fascinating tension: Can duty truly override destiny, or will their shared past force a reckoning?
But here's the controversy: Is it ethical to weaponize a cosmic evil like It for military gain, or does that just invite more horror into the world? And what if Rose's ancestral duties clash with Francis's patriotism—whose side would you take in this moral showdown?
What do you think? Does this flashback add depth to the characters, or does it feel like a contrived way to link past and present? Do you agree that sacrifice defines their lives, or is there room for redemption and love? Share your thoughts in the comments below—let's discuss!
