As the US faces a daunting 11½-4½ deficit going into the final day, the atmosphere intensified when several unacceptable remarks were directed at European players, most notably aimed at Rory McIlroy. These shouts were clearly personal attacks and often happened right as the golfers were preparing to make their shots. Despite the chaos, McIlroy and Shane Lowry managed to secure victory in their fourball match, aided by the presence of state troopers patrolling the holes.
Bradley explained his perspective, stating, "I thought the fans were passionate. I mean, their home team is getting beat bad. They are passionate fans." He acknowledged the reports from Rome, implying that the atmosphere there was troubling. "But from what I've observed here in New York, the fans have been reasonably well-mannered. Of course, there are always a few individuals who push boundaries, and that’s unfortunate. I appreciated seeing our players attempt to calm down some of the rowdier crowd members."
Moreover, Bradley reacted strongly to any suggestion that the US team provoked fans into overexcitement. He pointed out that Collin Morikawa had encouraged fans to bring "chaos" to the Ryder Cup, emphasizing, "Ryder Cups are wild. I don’t agree with the notion that our team incited any unruliness. I believe your comments are misguided. The Ryder Cup is a lively event filled with fervent supporters and enthusiastic players."
Luke Donald, meanwhile, was pressed to discuss the challenging experiences faced by his team. He described the environment as "loud" and "raucous" and emphasized that personal insults and disruptive noises during crucial moments, such as when players were about to hit their shots, were forms of crossing the line. "This type of behavior has occurred at past Ryder Cups as well. We prepared for it, and I am pleased with how well our players have handled the situation. When the competition gets tougher, it often fires them up more. They’ve shown an impressive ability to endure and react positively to adversity, which makes me incredibly proud as a captain."
As Europe only requires two and a half points to retain the coveted cup, Bradley recognizes that the US team is in dire need of what could be termed a sporting miracle. In his own words, "Wild stuff happens in sports all the time."
Donald also addressed the situation concerning Viktor Hovland's neck injury, which may lead to the singles matches on Sunday being reduced to 11 instead of the planned 12. He is en route now to get an MRI, and we will learn more about his condition in the morning. He would absolutely love to play and will do everything possible to participate."
