Get ready, film enthusiasts! The production company behind the global phenomenon Barbie, along with the critically acclaimed Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, is taking its talents international. LuckyChap, led by the visionary Margot Robbie, is joining forces with the European powerhouse Mediawan Group to launch LuckyChap International, a new venture based in London.
This exciting partnership, slated to officially launch in January 2026, will be spearheaded by the dynamic duo of Mona and Tanya Qureshi. They'll serve as co-managing directors, overseeing creative and operational aspects across the UK and Europe. Their mission? To produce international film and television projects that stay true to LuckyChap's creator-driven philosophy.
Mona Qureshi brings her experience as a director of scripted series at Netflix UK, where she oversaw titles like Adolescence (Plan B – Mediawan), Scott Frank’s Dept Q, and Lena Dunham’s Too Much. Tanya Qureshi, on the other hand, comes from the BBC, where she was a commissioning editor in drama and previously the head of comedy, responsible for projects such as Riot Women, Waiting for the Out, Am I Being Unreasonable?, and Amandaland.
The Qureshi sisters expressed their excitement, stating that working together at LuckyChap feels like a dream. They plan to combine their individual career experiences to expand this new chapter together. They also mentioned their excitement about expanding LuckyChap's mission internationally.
LuckyChap's partners, including Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Milan Popelka, see this as a long-term goal finally realized. They believe they've found the perfect combination in Mediawan's passion for storytelling and the creative leadership of Mona and Tanya Qureshi. They are confident that this partnership will propel their journey forward, aligning creatively, culturally, and operationally.
Pierre-Antoine Capton, Mediawan's chairman and co-founder, is thrilled to support LuckyChap's talented teams. He emphasized Mediawan's commitment to championing creative excellence and outstanding stories from the best talents worldwide. He believes this partnership embodies their global growth ambitions, especially through strategic and innovative collaborations.
But here's where it gets interesting... LuckyChap will retain majority ownership and control of the new entity. This venture will collaborate closely with the company's existing US teams while leveraging the creative and production advantages of the UK and Europe. This expansion follows the record-breaking success of Barbie and upcoming projects like Sterling Point and Wuthering Heights.
This move also strengthens LuckyChap's ties to Mediawan, a rapidly expanding European studio. Mediawan has built a global network of over 80 production labels across 14 countries. In 2023, they acquired a significant stake in Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment.
Controversy Alert: Some might argue that this international expansion could dilute LuckyChap's unique creative vision. What do you think? Will this global venture enhance or potentially alter the company's distinctive approach to filmmaking? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
