NASCAR is revving up its engines, and the racing world is buzzing with excitement and controversy!
In a bold move, NASCAR has decided to boost the horsepower of its Cup Series engines, taking them from 670 hp to a mighty 750 hp. This power surge will be implemented across all oval tracks under 1.5 miles and road courses, starting with the 2026 season. But here's where it gets interesting: this decision is aimed at enhancing the spectacle on these circuits, which have been struggling to keep up with the introduction of the Next Gen car in 2022.
The Next Gen car has brought a much-needed boost to the so-called "intermediate" ovals, but it seems to have left the "short tracks" in the dust. NASCAR's president, Steve O'Donnell, announced this change on a podcast hosted by former driver Dale Earnhart Jr., and it was a decision made with careful consideration.
"We listen to our fans, drivers, and stakeholders, including broadcasters, manufacturers, and race officials. Our fans are passionate, and their feedback is invaluable to us," O'Donnell emphasized.
And this is the part most people miss: the current short-track package, heavily reliant on aerodynamic efficiency, lacks the power to create the on-track competition fans crave. It's led to processions, and NASCAR is determined to change that.
"The 750 horsepower figure is a sweet spot," says John Probst, director of NASCAR racing product development. "It gives us the power we need without compromising the reliability of our V8 engines."
Doug Yates, CEO of Roush Yates Engines, agrees: "Increasing power to 750 hp won't make a huge difference, but going back to the 900-hp engines would be a massive undertaking and reduce engine lifespan."
If the initial races with the new power go well, NASCAR might just extend the 750 hp to all track types, except the superspeedways of Daytona, Talladega, and Atlanta.
