Okay, at least the age difference between Roberts and Harris is part of the plot. Still, we can't totally blame the Susan Sarandon character (then 52) for being more than a little suspicious about her ex-husband's new fiancée.

This causes even more friction between the kids and adults respectively. It's later revealed that Jackie has been silently battling lymphoma for some time, and the results of her latest scans say the disease is now terminal.

The wicked stepmother has not a scrap of self-sacrifice that traditional parenting demands. She represents parental knowledge withheld, and someone trapped in the family scenario who shows no desire to put any of her own development or ambitions on hold for the children she has been forced to look after.
