We absolutely love watching birds come to bird feeders in our yard. We have purchased many in the past and have them wherever we can in our yard. This is ironic because I absolutely freak if a bird comes near me, but there is something about watching them from a distance that makes me happy. My daughter is the same way. She is a nature watcher and I love it. I gave her a challenge this weekend to make a bird feeder from supplies that she could find in our house and she did great. This Plastic Bottle Bird Feeder Craft is useful, super cute and a great space for birds to hang out! Thisdiy bird feeder plastic bottle is perfect for teaching young chidlren to observe nature. Bird Feeder Ideas with Bottles

We started out by laying the bottle on it’s side and cutting off the ‘top’. Not the actual top with the spout on it, but when it’s laying on it’s side – the top of it they. This is slightly difficult and can be very dangerous so I would suggest an adult doing this part. If you have an exacto knife, use that to cut the plastic. Otherwise, if you squish a part of the plastic together and cut that, it will make a slit big enough to put scissors in to continue cutting. We cut ours to look like a ship.

Once the space is cut, use the hole punch to punch four holes. These are on each end, each corner of the opening. This is where you will attach the pipe cleaner which will hold the bird feeder wherever you decide to hang it.

My daughter cut out shapes from the sticky foam. She chose to do a sun, clouds, flowers and leaves to continue with the nature theme. This is where your child can get creative. Whatever they would like to decorate their bird feeder with, they can.

Next it is time to cut slits for the popsicle stick perches. I honestly used the hole punch to punch a hole next to where I wanted to cut the slit. This gave an opening for the scissors to go in and made it MUCH easier to cut the slit. Again, an exacto knife would have been easier but of course I couldn’t find mine.

We cut the slits equal distances on each side, two on each side, so that they were opposite of eachother. This way the popsicle sticks could slide in easily on both sides.

Once the bottle had all of it’s slices and cuts, it was time for her to assemble. She attached her foam ‘stickers’, slid in the popsicle sticks and attached the pipe cleaners.

It was ready to go. We figured out the perfect place for it to hang and then filled it with bird seed. This is a fantastic bird feeder because there is tons of space for the birds to rest and relax while they eat. It is like a little feeding trough or food ship for the birds.
