Toomey, a veteran with nearly three decades at Marriott, knows this landscape intimately. He's seen firsthand what it takes to build a hotel from the ground up. His perspective? "The most difficult job for a hotelier is opening a hotel from zero," he stated.

This isn't just about the grand opening; it's a months-long marathon. It involves assembling a stellar team, selling the vision, and pouring your heart into every detail.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Toomey highlights that the initial launch is just the beginning. The real work begins six to twelve months prior to the grand opening. This period is critical for staffing, marketing, and ensuring everything is ready to welcome the first guests.

Once a hotel chain establishes a presence and builds its brand, the process becomes smoother. Customer loyalty programs, like Marriott Bonvoy, which boasts nearly 228 million members worldwide, significantly ease the expansion process. Toomey himself experienced this firsthand, finding the initial hotel openings in India far more challenging than the subsequent ones.

However, it's not just the hotel industry where this rings true. Kwon Ping Ho, founder of the Banyan Group, even went so far as to say that "the worst business to be in is hospitality." He pointed out the intensive management, time, and people requirements, as well as the vulnerability to external events.

This sentiment echoes across various industries. Elon Musk, during a 2013 interview, admitted that creating companies isn't always enjoyable, and Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, confessed that "nobody in their right mind" would willingly start a company from scratch, given the immense challenges involved.
