Karpathos Port

Karpathos Port is the main harbor and is situated on the island’s southeastern coast, right at Pigadia, Karpathos’ capital town. Surrounded by large rocky hills, it lies within walking distance from the town center and offers great views of Pigadia’s picturesque houses.

Located between Rhodes and Crete, Karpathos is one of the remotest islands in the Dodecanese and the port does not get particularly busy. It serves fishing and excursion boats, ferries from Athens (Piraeus) and Rhodes, as well as water taxis. Moreover, it receives seasonal ferry connections from Halki, Kasos, Santorini, Anafi and Heraklion in Crete, while, depending on the year, it may also be connected with other islands, such as Kalymnos, Kos, Leros, Lipsi, Patmos and Symi.

The ferry company that operates routes from Athens and other Greek islands to Karpathos is Blue Star.

Transportation options

Town: 1.5 km / 0.9 miles | Airport: 14 km / 9 miles | Diafani: 49.5 km / 30.7 miles | Olympos: 43.5 km / 27 miles

Public Buses
Public buses (KTEL) are the best transportation option for those traveling on a budget. The central bus station is centrally located on 28 Oktovriou Street (October 28th Street), around 1 kilometer from the port. From there, you can take the bus to the Airport, Diafani and many other major villages and beaches. However, you need to bear in mind that bus routes are not very frequent, as, during the high season, there are just 1-3 daily routes, depending on the destination. Tickets can be purchased directly from the bus driver.

Taxis
Though taxis are an expensive option when compared to buses, they are definitely faster and more flexible, regardless of the time of day. Many taxis can be found in every central spot, including Karpathos Port and the town center. For greater convenience, you can also book a taxi by calling on any of the following numbers: 0030 22450 22705, 0030 22450 23071, 0030 697 2590224, 0030 697 7271997.

Car Rentals
Renting a car is not only the most convenient way to leave the portbut also to move around the island and explore all its natural and cultural gems with greater freedom, without having to rely on buses or taxis. Car rental agencies can be found around the port and the seafront.

It is also good to know that large hotel complexes may offer shuttle service to and from the port. To arrange a port transfer (if available), you should contact your accommodation prior to arrival. This service is usually available at an additional charge, but, in some cases, it may be available for free.

Facilities

The main port of Karpathos is conveniently located within walking distance from the town center of Pigadia, so it abounds in tourist facilities, from accommodation options and car rental agencies to shops, restaurants and bars.
At Karpathos Port, you can also find ticket offices where you can get your ferry tickets if your company does not offer web check-in or buy them on-site.

Diafani Port

Diafani is a small port located around 50 kilometers north of Karpathos Port. It receives a few ferry connections from Athens (Piraeus) and Sitia in Crete, as well as from certain islands of the Dodecanese and the Cyclades, such as Rhodes, Halki, Kasos, Santorini and Anafi. Excursion boats also leave from Diafani for nearby secluded beaches and the charming Saria Islet.

Transportation options

Town: 49 km / 30.5 miles | Karpathos Port: 49 km / 30.7 miles | Airport: 63 km / 39 miles | Olympos: 7.5 km / 5 miles

Public Buses
Diafani is connected by bus to Karpathos Port, but there are no bus routes to the airport or other parts of the island. The best way to reach the various beaches around Diafani is to hike along the various trails or travel on one of the local caique boats.

Taxis
A taxi is a convenient means of transport around Diafani, allowing visitors to reach nearby destinations like the mountainous Olympos. Visitors can also get from/to Diafani by taxi from other parts of the island, but distances are great, affecting the price accordingly. To arrange a transfer with a Diafani-based taxi, you can call on 0030 697 6120149.

Car Rentals
One of the best ways to explore the north of the island is by renting a car or other type of vehicle. There are no car rental agencies in Diafani, though, so you will have to rent your vehicle at Karpathos Port. Please bear in mind that the mountain road from Spoa to Olympos is mainly unsurfaced and bumpy, so car rental agencies may charge extra insurance before they allow customers to drive their cars to Olympos and Diafani.

Facilities

Visitors can find some cafes and traditional taverns serving local delicacies along the seaside promenade. There are some accommodation options, too, but there aren’t any large hotel complexes in the area.
