INTRODUCTION
This is a special compilation for all the Chinese New Year related recipes. It will be divided into 3 posts.
- Part 1 is concerning all the cookies, pastries pertaining to the Chinese New Year recipes.
- Part 2 is this post for all traditional auspicious kuih used for praying, snack and dessert recipes which was consumed during the Chinese New Year period. Golf Ball Pineapple Tarts (凤梨酥） – Top recipes in year 2014
Open Faced Pineapple Tarts (凤梨挞） – This yields a melt in the mouth tart
Nonya Crispy Pineapple Tarts – This yields a crispy crust
Matcha Cream Cheese Pineapple Rolls (绿茶奶酪凤梨卷） – A newly invented recipes combining green tea and cream cheese. You can use your favourite rolls to roll the pastry.
Taiwanese Pineapple Cake (台式凤梨酥） – In recent year, apparently this has become common during Chinese New Year
TRADITIONAL AND TRENDY SNACKS
Honeycomb cookies, Kuih Loyang aka Kuih Ros (蜂巢饼或糖环） – A traditional moulded cookies that is well like by many
Peanut Puff aka Kok Chai (油角，角仔） – a Cantonese recipe that has the auspicious meaning of puffy wallet.
Kueh Bahulu （蛋花糕） – A traditional snack and if you wanted it to be crispy, you can add 1-2 tablespoon of rice flour.
Chinese Peanut Candy (花生糖， 花生条） – Many people like to have this snack to munch during Chinese New Year. It’s sweetness also means auspicious to the Chinese New year
Agar Agar Sweets (燕菜糖） – A very common sweets in the olden days made of dried agar agar
Rempeyek Kacang or Peyek (印尼花生脆饼）– In recent years, this has also become a very common snack. For those who have the mould, you can always use the mould to prepare round one.
Prawn or Fish Crackers (Keropok, 炸鱼饼，炸虾饼） – A must have for Sarawakian Chinese families to serve Keropok during Chinese New Year
Sweet Potatoes Crackers (炸番薯饼， keropok ubi) – You can either used sweet potatoes or potatoes for this recipe. Even yam or pumpkin can be used.
Arrowhead Chips (香脆慈姑片，茨菇片） – It has become very common during Chinese New Year as it is the production seasons of arrowhead in China
Angel Wings (Les Bugnes 法国蛋散，天使的翅膀） – This is slightly different from the traditional cookies that is savoury prepared using fermented bean curd. This recipe is from French and is very aromatic.
Ear Lobe Biscuits or Spiral Biscuits (螺旋饼, 耳朵饼) – A traditional snack that is crispy and aromatic
Twisted Bread Dough (麻花–hemp flower) – Some families served this to guest . It comes in the form of sweet or savoury prepared using garlic
Kampar Chicken Biscuit （Kai Zai Paeng or 鸡仔饼） – It is very trendy to bake this cookie for Chinese New Year in Chinese Facebook group. It is a delicious snack
Kuih Siput (螺旋饼）– Though this is consider as Malay snack, however, it seems that some Chinese families are prepare this snack to serve guest also.
Indian Snack Recipe: Besan Murukku or Chakli (姆鲁古 கடலை மாவு முறுக்கு) – I am utterly surprised that many members of Facebook Group said that Murukku is one of the new year goodies that they will buy every year. Therefore, I have included here for those who are interested.
Nuts Crispy Brittle or Nuts Sweets (坚果脆片） – This is the traditional method of doing the brittle nuts and sweets using maltose instead of the expensive florenta flour.
Shrimp Floss Rolls aka Sambal Udang Kering Mini Rolls (虾米卷）– This is the bake version but you can always deep fried for crispier result
Snow White Mini Popiah Rolls – It is advised that if you are preparing this, deep fried will give much better aroma than oven baked.
No Bake Peanut Butter Cornflake Cookies (免烤酥脆玉米片曲奇）– A no bake version which is easier to prepare
Crispy Crabstick Snack (酥脆蟹肉小吃） – Oven baked version and getting popular in recent years
Seaweed Fish Fillet Snack (紫菜鱼丝条） – This is my version of fish fillet snack which I think is crispier
Crispy Seaweed Crackers (酥炸紫菜饼） – A vegetarian snack suitable for young and old
Pistachio and Almond Biscotti (开心果及杏仁饼干）– Shopping centre are selling this snack. To prepare this snack, you need to slice it very thinly such that it become crispy. If possible, use egg white instead of whole eggs
Chinese Pork Jerky – A must have for most families . This is the instant recipe without the long winded drying etc..
Seaweed Meat Floss (海苔肉松）– Some families give to relatives meat floss instead of bak kwa. A rather easy to do recipe.
Salted Egg Yolk Potato Chips (金莎咸蛋薯片） – A new trendy snack which is appropriate for Chinese New Year
TRADITIONAL MOULDED COOKIES
Kuih Koya (绿豆糕) – Traditional moulded cookies using mung bean flour or mung bean.
Kueh Bangkit – Another traditional biscuits that are still very popular and full of coconut and egg aroma.
Chinese Almond Biscuits (杏仁酥饼）– It is similar to the famous Macao almond biscuit.
SAVOURY COOKIES
Chilli Shrimp Floss Cookie – A hot and spicy cookies that will challenge your abilities to eat spiciness. Chilli padi can be added. The deliciousness will very much depend on the quality of the hae bee hiam.
Curry Laksa Cookies (咖喱辣沙曲奇） – quite a trendy bake nowadays and sold rather expensively in Singapore
Cheesy Biscuits – Kaastengels (奶酪饼干） – Modified from the famous indonesian savoury cookies made using a number of cheeses
Cream Cheese Bak Kwa Savoury Cookies (肉干咸香饼干） – It is a good cookies if you have home bak kwa that has trimmings by making this cookie.
Melt in the mouth Bak Kwa cookies (肉干饼干） – It is capture in the same recipe as above but this recipe yields crispier shortbread type of bak kwa cookies
Cheesy Biscuit Bites (芝士小饼干） – make it small and it will stand out in a tray of sweet cookies.
BUTTER COOKIES, CHEESY AND BUTTERY COOKIES
Daisy Biscuits, Biskuit Semperit, Biskuit Dahlia, 挤花饼干 – Another classic biscuits that have been existed for ages. This recipes have bright yellow colour because of the custard powder that made it more fragrant,
Uppåkra (Swedish Butter Potato Starch Cookies) (瑞典马铃薯粉牛油饼干）– This is essentially the same as what others have called a “German” cookies. There is no such cookies in German but uppakra was existed in Sweden for a long time using potatoes flour.
Cherry Blossom Stained Glass Cookies (樱花玻璃曲奇）– A feature recipe in New Strait Time on January 2015. Do not be over greedy with the sweets as it will bubble and stain your cookies. A small quantities is adequate.
Melting Moments – A classic butter cookies that was common in the early 80s and before. It seems it made a comeback because of the presence of Jenny cookies.
Traditional Short Bread Biscuits (英式传统牛油饼干）– Shortbread biscuit was sold during Chinese New Year in Kuching at quite a high price. Preparation is very easy and if you want it to be very crispy, you may need to bake longer but colour will be compromised.
Cassava Cheese Cookies (芝士薯粉饼 Biskuit Sago Keju） – an item being sold in Singapore Bengawan Solo
S Shape Butter Cookies (Kuih S) – A uniquely Sarawak butter cookie that is shaped in the alphabet S
Coffee Cookies (咖啡曲奇）
Matcha Almond Cookies（ 翡翠杏仁饼干） – This is a very presentable crispy biscuits. There are many variations. Beside matcha, you can used chocolate and etc.
Cranberry Biscuits (蔓梅饼干） – A trendy bake in 2016. You can actually used pistachios too for the biscuits.
Famous Amos Copycat Chocolate Chips Cookies （山寨版之Famous Amos 巧克力曲奇） – Many members baked chocolate cookies. Shape will depend on what you like. If you like irregular shape, you can just scope out the cookie dough and bake.
Macadamia Russian Tea Cakes – A buttery cookies usually served during Western weddings. Traditionally walnut was used

Orange Butter Cookies (香橙牛油饼干） – For Chinese New Year, this cookies can be moulded into smaller cute shape for serving. It is full of orange aroma.
Kueh Momo or Kueh Makmur or Ghee Cookies – This is slightly different from West Malaysian Kuih Makmur which have peanut in it. This recipe uses only ghee and flour plus milk powder. A very fragrile cookies that is hard to maintain its shape.
Nan Khatai or Indian Short Bread Cookies (杏仁酥油饼）– If ghee is used, it is very aromatic but shape can be compromised. If butter is used, shape will be maintained but less aromatic.
Cashew Sugee Cookies (腰豆苏吉饼）
NUTS COOKIES
Green Peas Cookies (青豆饼） – This cookies is getting popular over the years. The cookies are supposed to melt in the mouth. It is not crispy if you did not over cooked
Chickpeas cookies (马豆酥）– a newly created recipe that really melts in the mouth
Peanut Cookies (花生饼）– There are two recipes in the post. One is from raw peanuts and another one is using peanut butter which is very much easier.
Cashew Nut Cookies (腰豆酥饼） – Another common nuts cookies served during Chinese New Year
Almond Biscuits – 杏仁饼干 – A traditional nuts cookies recipes . You can used hazelnut if preferred.
Hup Toh Soh （核桃酥， 合桃酥） – I have used the traditional recipe like those sold in the shop for Chinese New Year. This is one of the biscuits that suits my taste bud and usually will keep it for my own consumption.
OTHER COOKIES
Salted Egg Yolk Cookies (蛋黄酥饼） – Top recipe in year 2015 and so far have not heard of any readers who complain about this biscuits.
ANZAC biscuits (澳纽燕麦饼干） – I saw members are baking irregular biscuits for Chinese New Year and some of them opt for wholemeal version. Possibly this recipe will suit their tastebuds.
Oreo Milky Biscuits (Oreo 奶香饼干）
Nestum Cereal Cookies (麦片饼干)
Plum Blossom Cookies (梅花饼） – Cream cheese thumbprint cookies with an Asian Touch
Chocolate Coated Almond Shortbread Cookies aka London Almond Cookies (伦敦杏仁饼) – A cookies that is common in West Malaysia and the name has nothing to do with London.
Chocolate Nestum Finger Biscuits (巧克力麦片手指饼干 Biskuit Jejari Nestum co*klat）– A very good snack that you can asking your kids to prepare. It is crispy and addictive.

Lemon/Orange Meringue Kisses or Ice Cream Cookies (香橙蛋白霜饼/冰淇淋饼）
CAKES
In Sarawak, Chinese New Year visiting will be served with many types of cakes beside cookies and snack.
Authentic Lapis Legit (Spekkoek 印尼千层蛋糕）
Prune Lapis (黑枣千层蛋糕） – A healthier prune lapis as compared to commercially sold
Water Melon Lapis (Lapis tembikai or 西瓜千层蛋糕） (16 egg yolks and 6 egg whites)
Coffee Peppermint Lapis (6 whole eggs)
Cream Cheese Chocolate Lapis Cake (5 whole eggs)
Lapis Horlicks (Horlicks Layered Cake) (8 whole eggs)
Ferrero Rocher Layered Cheese Cake (金莎千层奶酪蛋糕） – I got to know this cheesecake during last Chinese New Year visiting in Sarawak where host served guest with this delicious cheesecake
Steamed Brownie Cheesecake (蒸布朗尼奶酪蛋糕） – This cake is also one of the common cakes served to guest during Chinese New Year
Steamed Prune Cake (Kek Kukus Prun or 蒸黑枣蛋糕）
Malaysian Beehive Cake or Honeycomb Cake （蜂窝蛋糕）– This cake is extremely common in Sarawak Chinese Household during Chinese New Year . It is a bit chewy and full of carmelize aroma.
Cake Seri kaya Sarawak, Kek Belachan, Kek Hati Parit) revisited.. (砂朥越深夜蛋糕） – This is a very famous cake in Sarawak and also common during Chinese New Year . It is very expensive and usually served to guest during Chinese New Year.
Sarawak Kek Lumut Or Green Moss Steamed Cake (砂朥越青苔蒸糕）
Steamed Soda Crackers Nestum Cake (苏打饼麦片蒸糕）
Steamed Fruit Cake or Kek Kukus Buah (杂果蒸糕） – Though people always associated fruit cake with Christmas, in Sarawak, it is always one of the cake prepared to serve guest during Chinese New Year
Prosperity Pineapple Cake aka Pineapple Upside Cake (吉祥旺来蛋糕）
Mandarin Orange Cranberry Muffins (大吉大利吉祥马芬） – This is actually linked to Chinese New Year but is a good recipe to get rid of the mandarin orange s.
Mandarin Orange Jam (橘子酱） –If you have excess mandarin oranges, can try this recipe to get rid of some of the Mandarin oranges
