Review: Kellogg's Special K Hot 3 granen original and red fruits (2024)

I quite like the Kellogg's Special K red berries cereal - really amazed by how good the dried fruits taste - and this winter, the Special K product range got a new addition in the Netherlands: the Special K Hot 3 granen (English name: Special K Multi-grain porridge). Not only in the red fruits flavor that I really like, but also in the original flavor without anything added. The special thing about it, is that it can be eaten warm and cold too.

Kellogg's Special K Hot 3 granen original* (7 bags) and red fruits* (6 bags), €2.19 each

Kellogg's Special K Multi-grain porridge original has one bag more than the red fruits flavor, but they both have the same price per box. I really like the individual bags that have the right portion for one person and the bag can also be re-used to measure the milk with, so you don't have to wash another measuring bowl too (perfect for lazy people like me!). I quite enjoy eating something warm in the morning, but I don't really want to wash pots and pans, or any more bowls than the one I ate from. So, the Kellogg's Special K Multi-grain porridge is exactly what I have been looking for.

I don't know if you can read the instructions, but I will shortly sum it up for you. First, you rip the bag open along the dotted line. Put the contents in a microwaveable bowl, use the bag to measure the milk (fill it up until the line that is visible in the inside, which is 140 ml) and pour in into the bowl. Stir it a bit, before you place it in the microwave for 2.5 minutes (800 W). After you take it out, stir it and let it sit for 2 minutes or just until it got the thickness that you prefer.

The whole process is quite easy, but I wish there was a dotted opening in the carton packaging, in which you can place the paper bag, so that you can use both hands to pour the milk in it. Some hair dyes have that too and I find it very handy. Now, it gets pretty clumsy when I need to hold the bag in one hand and gently pour the milk with the other hand in the relatively small bag.

I don't really like using the microwave when it isn't really necessary, so I just used a pan to warm up the milk. (I know, I just wrote that I hate washing the pan in the early morning, but at least, I know that I can use the microwave, if I am really in a hurry). I dislike the flavor of boiled milk, so I poured the milk into the bowl right before it started to boil. The porridge didn't get thick and it was very watery. I think it tastes similar to the over-night oats that is so popular among food bloggers.

The next day, I tried eating it cold. Even though the porridge tastes pretty good on its own, I added some almonds and dried fruit in it for some more flavor. It tasted similar to the previous time, but then with slightly harder pieces in it and cold milk instead of warm milk.

I started to like eating the porridge cold, as it doesn't have the peculiar warm milk scent. So, I first tried eating the Kellogg's Special K Multi-grain porridge red fruits cold. The red fruits flavor really got into the milk and it tasted very delicious.

I was starting to think that I made the Kellogg's Special K Multi-grain porridge wrongly as even though it tasted quite nice, it wasn't filling at all. So that's why, I properly boiled the milk with the contents of one bag of Kellogg's Multi-grain porridge red fruits in a pan. I was surprised to see that it actually got the perfect thickness and it was very filling. The only con is that the light, sweet red fruits flavor wasn't that pronounced anymore.
